In this series for International Women’s Day, we sat down with Miriam Varoli, General Manager of Andaz London Liverpool Street to discuss her role at the hotel, what International Women’s Day means to her and what’s in the pipeline for 2024.

Q. Talk us through your role at Andaz.

A. My days are filled with ensuring exceptional guest experiences, leading a passionate team, and collaborating with partners to bring innovative ideas to life. What I cherish most is the human connection – witnessing our team create memorable moments for guests and fostering a positive, supportive work environment.

Q. What does International Women’s Day mean to you and how is Andaz celebrating?

A. For me, International Women’s Day is a powerful reminder of the incredible contributions women make in all aspects of life. At Andaz, we’re celebrating by hosting a panel discussion with inspiring female leaders, partnering with a local women’s empowerment organization, and offering a special menu featuring female chefs. It’s a day to celebrate, learn, and recommit to building a more equitable future for all.

Q. Run us through a typical day in the life of a hotel manager in a busy City hotel.

A. While every day throws in different challenges and tasks, I firmly believe the most essential part is staying close to my team. Understanding their individual motivations and what helps them thrive is crucial to building a strong, engaged team. Whether it’s through regular one-on-one conversations, team-building activities, or simply keeping an open door for feedback, fostering open communication and genuine connection is paramount. When my team feels heard, valued, and understood, they’re empowered to go above and beyond for our guests and each other, truly creating an exceptional experience for everyone.

Q. What do you love most about this hotel?

A. Beyond the incredible team, what truly captivates me about Andaz London is its architectural journey. The labyrinthine corridors whisper stories of the past, leading you to hidden gems like the majestic Masonic Temple. Stepping into these unique spaces feels like stepping into another era, adding a layer of intrigue and historical charm that sets Andaz apart. It’s more than just a hotel; it’s an immersive experience that fuels my imagination and constantly surprises me with its hidden corners.

Q. The City is full of amazing hotels. What can guests expect from a night’s stay at Andaz?

  • DJ-curated vibes: Immerse yourself in the pulsing beat of London’s nightlife with our resident DJs spinning electrifying tunes in the lobby, adding a touch of urban energy to your stay.
  • Unwind with wine (and new connections): Mingle with fellow travelers and locals during our evening wine hour in the lobby. It’s the perfect opportunity to break the ice, share travel stories, and forge new connections over a glass of something delicious.
  • Embrace history at Lady A Pub: Take a step back in time and soak up the authentic atmosphere of our historic pub, “The Lady Abercorn” With its traditional décor, hearty fare, and warm ambiance, it’s a haven for history buffs and comfort seekers alike.

Q. What challenges have you encountered in your role and how have you overcome them?

A. Adapting to new social norms and communication styles after 10 years in Japan. I overcame this by initiating conversations with colleagues and locals. Asking questions and be open to different perspectives.

Q. What’s your biggest achievement in the role?

A. My biggest achievement isn’t singular, but rather a daily effort – witnessing the ripple effect of celebrating my team’s successes, curating bespoke experiences for our guests and partnering with local charities to positively impact the lives of the community in which we serve.

Q. What’s your advice to women who would like to work in a similar role in the City?

A. Invest in your team, embrace lifelong learning, build strong relationships, be resilient and agile. However most importantly, remember to be true to yourself.

Q. Are there any other hotels in the City that you are particularly fond of and why?

A. Whilst I am in awe of the vibrant hotel scene in London and explore different options occasionally, The Ritz truly holds a unique place in my heart. Starting my career there as a room attendant at 19 wasn’t just a job; it was an immersion into the world of hospitality. The meticulous attention to detail, the legendary service, and the sheer history within those walls – it left an indelible mark on me.

Q. What’s in the pipeline for 2024 for Andaz?

A. Expect even more personalized guest experiences, deeper connections to local businesses through bespoke offerings, and continued celebration of our amazing team alongside initiatives supporting underserved communities.
