TALES of dragons are usually confined to the pages of George RR Martin novels, but now the Lord Mayor’s Appeal has reason to praise the mythical beasts.

On 29 July teams from City Livery Companies, Square Mile corporates and charities will ride the crest of a wave to Fairlop Waters, Barkingside, to take part in the appeal’s inaugural Dragon Boat Race.

Entrants will compete in the hope of winning the Lord Mayor’s Cup while raising awareness of the mental health services available to residents and workers in the City.

“Mental health difficulties can affect any of us at any time, employers and employees, in each and every sector. Let us therefore stand together and show our support for ending mental health stigma,” said Lord Mayor Charles Bowman.

The event, organised by Lady Lenzie, is expected to generate thousands for the appeal, which during Mr Bowman’s time in office will raise funds for Samaritans, Place2Be and OnSide Youth Zones.

“The team work involved in taking part in this Dragon Boat Race event can be a powerful counter balance to mental ill-health,” explained Lady Lenzie.

“Combined with the physical benefits of taking part I hope it will make a positive contribution to improving mental wellbeing, and all for a good cause.”
