The Wasu Charitable Foundation has partnered with several organisations to host a prostate cancer screening event in the City this October.

The screening will be held at Apothecaries Hall, Blackfriars on the 11 October and will cost £35.

In the UK, there is currently no national screening programme for prostate cancer and on average, a private screening costs between £80 – £100.

Jat Wasu, CEO of The Wasu Charitable Foundation hopes to encourage men to undergo a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test which takes less than five minutes to complete and plays a key role in the early detection of prostate cancer.

The tests will be processed by an independent laboratory with results delivered online, removing the need for an additional visit.

The level of prostate-specific antigen in the blood is measured in the PSA test and in some cases, this can indicate the presence of cancer.

Mr Wasu said, “Right now, men must ask their GP for a PSA blood test unless they exhibit symptoms of prostate cancer. This current practice is failing many men.”

“Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men and the second most common cancer overall, just behind breast cancer in women.

“Early detection significantly increases treatment success rates which is why it is crucial for men to be aware of their risks and to consider getting a PSA,” he added.

Typically, men do not experience symptoms in the early stages of prostate cancer.

In the UK, over 50,000 cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed annually with 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, and more than 12,000 deaths occur each year due to the disease.

In a bid to help provide better health outcomes for men in the City, The Wasu Charitable Foundation has partnered with Freeman Simon Fordham, The Graham Fulford Charitable Trust, The Worshipful Company of Apothecaries and The Company of Entrepreneurs.

Mr Wasu, who established The Wasu Charitable Foundation in 1999, said, “The City Prostate Cancer Screening Day would not have been possible without the generous support of our partners.

“In the true spirit of collaboration, we are proud to offer men this invaluable opportunity to access such a crucial health service that will take a few short minutes and could save their life,” he said.
