New Chairman of the City of London Corporation Markets Board elected

Henry Pollard has been elected Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Markets Board.

The Markets Board oversees the management of the three wholesale food markets owned by the City Corporation. These are Smithfield Market in the City of London, Billingsgate Market in Tower Hamlets and New Spitalfields Market in Waltham Forest.

Pollard said: “Our historic wholesale markets are vital to the food retail sector and supply chain in the capital and beyond.

“I look forward to working collaboratively with Members of the board, officers and our market tenants to maintain and improve our markets, ensuring they are fit for the future.

“In line with the City Corporation’s Climate Action Strategy, sustainability will be a top priority. We will be working on reducing food waste and energy usage, increasing recycling and exploring innovation in transport.

“I hope that this board will also make a positive contribution towards the City Corporation’s aspiration of co-locating our three wholesale markets at modern, sustainable facilities in Dagenham Dock.”
